Alternative storytelling 2

Do you remember our discussion about alternative storytelling?
I found this example of using clouds on graphic from Publico blog.
This is really cool example how to use it. And in my humble opinion it is perfect for Metro reports from important but boring debates!

Colour of grey

Two ads. One with colors. One grey. What do the ads do to the rest of the page? I think the lesson here is that colors works in a positive way. The reader that asks for more greyness is not born!
(That said, the Dutch ad is actually very creative, its abot 1000 bicycles being stolen every day in Holland and how to deal with that)

Sexism or not

Two info graphics on the same subject, breast cancer.
Two very different approaches and a nice illustration to how much difference design makes.
Is the Spanish sexism in disguise of a good cause? Is the Swedish one too boring?

The future of Newspaper is no paper

Hi guys, I want to show you something. The first one is the new device of PlasticLogic, an american company that has developped a revolutionary plastic display where you can see papers, documents, magazines and even write on the screen. The screen uses electronic ink, visible in darkness or sunny days.
This device has no name, but it will turn upside down the world of papers as we know actually.
The size is the same as the cover of Fortune magazine. It's really robust because it resists the impact of your shoe on the screen. May be we will see on action in buses, metros and communters sooner than we think.
See the video in www.plasticlogic.com

Another thing: Esquire magazine launched a ¡n issue to celebrate 75th anniversary, in which the cover is an electronic ink cover. The images are moving. Ideal for our comercial guys but also for editorial purposes.

My reflection: iPhones, Kindles and other eBooks, electronic ink devices... I think Metro has to prepare for this coming days. We have to work side by side with these industries to be the first paper to transform its way of living. Don't know how. Have we to forget paper and just create contents for e-readers? Could we use both?
See video in blog.wired.com/gadgets/2008/09/video-esquire-e.htm

Both devices are only the beginning of a revolution. I imagine a future with flexible e ink devices, easy to keep in the pocket.

Alternative storytelling

You could write 500 words of Barack Obamas acceptance speech at the Democratic convention
None of four reader would read the that.
But what about the so tag cloud on the right?
The cloud shows a very precise picture of the speech. The bigger the words in the cloud the more important in the speech.
I got an pretty good idea of it in ten seconds.
I know a lot more of it after ten seconds than not reading a 500 words article in the Guardian.
Is this the way to go? Or is it to radical?

*Tag clouds can be created from any text with an free open source application.

Brazilian rules. Ok.

Wow...

Mario Garcias blog is a good place too check every now and then.
I agree with him that these pages are spectacular.
Big part of the staff at Metro in Brazil has their background at Folha de Sao Paolo.
Interesting to see that Garcia liked the same Obama page as I did. But it was of course first on
this blog.

Where where all the photographers..?

Half of all American newspapers had the same picture of McCain and his VP Sarah Palin on their Front Page
See them all here.
It's odd that there are so many pictures from Obamas party but so few from the Republicans.
My fav front on Obama may be the one from Plain Dealer (how cool is that for a newspaper name... )
The picture is technically superb and gives you the feeling that you get to know something AFTER what everybody else is telling. Great pic, even though the headline is not on par with the picture it still make a great Front page.
Is it Metro?
